Constructed on a previously developed Lake Michigan site, the appropriately named Green Cottage was intended to be just that: a shining example of an environmentally conscious and sustainable home. From the design, planning and development stages, to the construction and finishing touches, much thought was given to implement as many green building techniques and specifications as possible, in the hopes that this home would create awareness and inspiration, proving that green can be fun, as well as responsible. Some of these features include: Icynene insulation, a geothermal closed loop heating system, a rain water harvesting system for irrigation, highly efficient faucets, toilets, lighting fixtures and appliances, a recycled brick fireplace surround, recycled barn wood laundry room door and wall, and an energy recovery ventilator to control fresh air exchange in the house.
